The Family Is Under Coordinated Attack — And the Proclamation Saw It Coming
The Family Proclamation was issued in 1995. The cultural attacks it warned against accelerated dramatically in the following decades. This is not coincidence.
D&C 2:1–3 — The Stakes
“Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.”
The work of the Restoration — the very first revelation to Joseph Smith that quoted scripture — is about turning the hearts of fathers and children to each other. The eternal family is not a cultural preference or a political position. It is the organizing unit of celestial society and the central purpose of the Restoration. An attack on the family is an attack on the reason the Restoration happened.
The stakes are explicit: if the hearts of fathers and children are not turned to each other, the whole earth will be “utterly wasted” at the Lord’s coming. Whatever else may be said about LDS doctrine, this is the clearest possible statement about the cosmic importance of the family unit.
What the Proclamation Said (1995)
The Family: A Proclamation to the World was presented by President Gordon B. Hinckley in September 1995. It affirmed that gender is eternal, that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God, that children are entitled to be born into a family with a father and a mother, and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of his children.

“We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.”
This was written in 1995 — before same-sex marriage was a mainstream political issue, before the mainstreaming of gender transition ideology, before birth rates had collapsed across the Western world, before the data on the collapse of marriage rates in the United States had fully emerged. The Proclamation was not describing what was already happening at scale. It was warning about what was coming.
What Has Happened Since
Since 1995, the following have occurred as documented social trends, not as moral panic:

- Marriage rates — Precipitous decline across all Western nations; marriage is no longer the default life structure for adults
- Birth rates — Collapse to below-replacement levels across Europe, Japan, South Korea, and increasingly the United States; demographic crisis declared in multiple nations
- Gender ideology — Mainstreaming of the claim that gender is self-identified and distinct from biological sex; legal codification in multiple jurisdictions; medical intervention in minors without parental consent in some regions
- Redefinition of marriage — Legal redefinition in most Western nations to remove the male/female requirement from the covenant structure
- Parent-child severing — Ideological frameworks that explicitly encourage children to identify against their biological parents’ values as a form of personal authenticity
These are moving in exactly the direction the Proclamation warned about. The “disintegration of the family” is a measurable demographic and social reality, not a metaphor. The Proclamation warned about it thirty years before it had reached its current level of intensity.
The Target
Satan’s strategy is not random. He cannot undo the Atonement. He cannot stop the Resurrection. He cannot prevent the return of the Savior. What he can attack is the eternal family — specifically, the conditions that make eternal family relationships possible:
Three Vectors of Attack
- Eliminate the meaning of gender — so there are no mothers and fathers, only “parents” of indeterminate role; eternal gender identity is the prerequisite for eternal family structure
- Redefine marriage — so the covenant structure no longer has the male/female polarity that makes eternal family relationships intelligible
- Attack parent-child relationships — so the generational chain is broken; D&C 2 identifies this as the condition that leads to the earth being “utterly wasted”
These are not independent cultural developments. They are a coherent pattern aimed at the same target — the conditions for eternal family relationships. Whether the people advancing these changes intend this or not is a separate question. The effect is the same: the systematic dismantling of the structures the Proclamation was designed to defend.
Verdict
The Proclamation on the Family is prophetic — not because it was vague enough to fit anything, but because it was specific and accurate. It warned about the disintegration of the family, the violation of covenants of chastity, and the failure to fulfill family responsibilities, and it connected these to “calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.” The calamities are now visible in the data.
The family is the unit of eternal society. Its defense is not cultural conservatism or political tribalism. It is eternal strategy, grounded in D&C 2’s warning that the failure to turn the hearts of fathers and children to each other is the condition that will leave the earth “utterly wasted.” The Restoration was not primarily about restoring theology. It was about restoring the conditions for eternal family relationships. That is what is under attack. And that is why this matters.
