Why the Plates Were Taken Back

The first tables of stone were broken. The ark was lost. The brazen serpent was ground to powder by a righteous king. The risen Christ ascended out of sight. God removes the artifact every single time — and He has never once explained Himself to a skeptic.

Why Would God Remove the Evidence?

It is put bluntly, and it should be. An angel delivered a set of gold plates, a book was produced from them, and then the angel took them back. The one object that could settle the question for everyone is unavailable, permanently, and by design.

Is that a foolish complaint? Not in the least. If a man told you he had documents proving his claim and then informed you that an angel had come and collected them, you would raise an eyebrow, and you would be perfectly right to raise it. The objection is asking a FAIR question about how evidence works.

So answer it on those terms. Not with an excuse — with the PATTERN, which turns out to be the most consistent habit God has.

He Has Done This Every Time

Not one physical artifact of divine origin has been left in human hands. Not one.

The Evidence God Took Away

The tables written by the finger of God — broken at the foot of the mountain (Exodus 32:19). The originals, in God’s own handwriting, destroyed.

The ark of the covenant — containing the tables, Aaron’s rod, and the pot of manna. Gone from history without an account of its end.

The Urim and Thummim of Israel — commanded by God, worn by the high priest, and lost.

The body of Moses — buried by the Lord, “but no man knoweth of his sepulchre” (Deuteronomy 34:6).

The risen Christ — the single greatest piece of evidence in the history of the world, and after forty days He ascended and a cloud received Him out of sight (Acts 1:9).

Every original manuscript of the Bible — not one autograph of any book survives. What the world has are copies of copies.

So anyone who calls the removal of the plates suspicious has to say the same about every item on that list. Why did God not preserve the tables He wrote with His own finger, and where is the ark in a museum, and where is the autograph of Isaiah, or one verified relic of the Crucifixion that anybody can point to? The complaint is not really about Joseph Smith at all. It is about the way God has always worked.

And Once He Explained Why

There is one case where scripture shows the reason directly, and it is worth the whole argument.

God commanded Moses to make a serpent of brass, and everyone who looked at it lived (Numbers 21:8–9). A genuine miracle, a genuine relic, kept for centuries. Then read what became of it.

2 Kings 18:4

“And brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it.”

Hezekiah, one of the most righteous kings in the whole record, destroyed an object that God Himself had commanded into existence. Why? Because Israel had started worshipping it. The relic that once pointed men toward God had become the thing standing between them and God.

Now imagine the plates sitting in a vault in Salt Lake City today, with pilgrimages to see them, relics made of the case they were kept in, arguments over who controls access, and metallurgical assays offered from the pulpit as the ground of a man’s testimony. How long before men were burning incense to it? God had already run that experiment ONCE, and He watched it end in idolatry.

Evidence Has Never Converted Anyone

The objection assumes that if only the proof were solid enough, belief would follow. Does it? Scripture runs that experiment repeatedly, and the assumption fails every single time.

They Saw, and Did Not Believe

Israel at Sinai — walked through a divided sea, ate manna daily, watched the mountain burn — and built a golden calf within weeks (Exodus 32:1–4).

Laman and Lemuel — an angel stood before them and spoke, and they were murmuring again before the chapter ended (1 Nephi 3:29–31).

The chief priests after Lazarus — presented with a man raised from four days dead, they “consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death” (John 12:10). Their response to the evidence was to plan its removal.

That last one deserves to sit for a moment. What did the undeniable miracle produce? Not faith. A murder plot. Abraham’s answer in the parable was right: if they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead (Luke 16:31).

Faith Is the Condition, Not the Consolation Prize

There is a rule about the order of things, and the Book of Mormon states it in one line: “ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith” (Ether 12:6).

The Savior said the same to a man who had insisted on physical proof and been given it: “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” (John 20:29). He did not refuse Thomas, and He never scolded the man for asking. He simply named which of the two positions carries the BLESSING.

And why does the order run that way? God is not building a database of people who assented to a demonstration. He is building sons and daughters who chose Him without being compelled to — and compelling evidence is called compelling for a reason. So leave the plates out on a table and what have you strengthened? Not faith. You have made it unnecessary and taken the choice out of it entirely.

What He Left Instead

The plates were not removed with nothing put in their place. Three things were left behind, and they are the same three God has always used.

Witnesses. Eleven men, on the legal standard God set for establishing His own word — “in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). Not one recanted, including three who left the Church and had every reason to.

The book. Five hundred pages that can be read, tested, weighed, and argued with by anyone, in any language, for free. That is a larger and more accessible body of evidence than a metal object in a case could ever be — and unlike the object, it is still in your hands.

The promise. “Ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true… he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost” (Moroni 10:4). A test available to every person alive, which does not require travel, credentials, or an appointment — which is more than can be said of a vault.

The Verdict

The plates were taken back for the same reason the brazen serpent was ground to powder, the same reason no man knows the grave of Moses, and the same reason a cloud received the risen Lord out of sight.

What did God do with the tables He wrote Himself? Let them be broken at the foot of the mountain. The ark? Let it disappear out of history without so much as an account of its end. A righteous king took a relic God had commanded and ground it to powder, because men had started burning incense to it. And when the evidence was overwhelming, what came of it? A golden calf at Sinai, murmuring within hours of an angel, and a plot to kill Lazarus a second time. The Lord Himself settled the matter: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Reject this and you have not rejected Joseph Smith. You have adopted a standard under which the God of the Bible fails His own test — because He has never, in any dispensation, left the artifact behind. He leaves witnesses, a record, and an invitation to ask Him. He always has.
